The Rise of the West is a thought provoking analysis of a key event in world history - what events and factors led to the rise of the West to global supremacy when in 1200 China and the Islamic World were world leaders in science, technology and global trade and the West lagged far behind.
It considers the factors that led to the decline of China and the Islamic world and in particular the impact of Genghiz Khan on World history. It concludes by examining the specific cultural and historical factors that led to the rise of the West and considers the factors that lead to the rise and fall of civilisations in the global scientific, technological and economic race.
It is essential reading for anyone interested in world history and the history of the factors that made the West great, and are essential for the rise of world powers in the industrial/scientific age.

The Rise of the West is part of Polarshift.

The Rise of the West eBook Matt Buttsworth

The question posed by this book: Why did the West rise? Has been asked by historians, philosophers and sociologist countless times. The answer varies as much as there are authors. Jared Diamond in "Guns Germs and Steel" posits a geographical explanation. Lewis in "Islam, what went wrong" addresses the religious-social weaknesses that doomed the Caliphate. Victor David Hanson in "Why the West won" points to the classical Greek battle formation and concept.

Dr. Buttsworth addresses the same question from a wider perspective. The West rose over not only Islam but also the mighty and histories Chinese civilization. He also brings two novel perspectives to the issue: One, the fragmentation of Western European polities that forced cut throat competition between city states and countries and Two, the Mongol invasion that shook the three civilizations Islamic, Chinese and European to the core.

Very well reasoned, argued and referenced, this is a seminal book that belongs in every historian's (electronic) bookshelf.

The Rise of the West eBook Matt Buttsworth Reviews

I found this book to be an excellent history book. It was very broad ranging, beginning with the conquests of Genghiz Khan in the 13th century and continuing right up until the beginning of the bloodbath of World War One. It also displayed a depth of historical knowledge, clear argumentation and an ease of description that was most enjoyable and thought provoking to read. I loved it.
liked it very much this book. simple language.
it covers all the eras. it begins with the rise of east. islam india china. then explains how west finally won.
Easy read but felt that it was as much opinion as fact. It does give food for thought. /the end
This book explains a lot of things. I always wondered why most technological developments like electricity didn't happen until we Americans came along. Gives one a real perspective on current events.
Reads far too much like someone's dissertation, but without the history and facts. Frankly....boring. cannot recommend this book. I finished it, but only as an exercise in completion.
